What medicines help against parasites in the human body?

No one is safe from helminths.And even the cleanest person is at risk of getting a helminthic infection in society.If a problem is identified, anthelmintic drugs easily cope with the body's defenses against parasites.

Symptoms of helminth damage

The first symptom indicating the need for testing can be any allergic reaction that does not come into contact with an obvious allergen.An example of this is a rash that was not preceded by contact with aggressive substances or the abuse of foods from the group of potential allergens.In addition, long-term bronchitis, the treatment of which by a therapist does not give a positive result, may indicate the presence of a parasite.

Abnormal bowel movements are another reason to check for helminthiasis.Once the parasite has settled in the intestines, it can interfere with normal peristalsis and bowel movements.When the intestines become a haven for certain dangerous worms, a person may experience a lack of energy and develop anemia or a severe lack of nutrients in the blood.This can be explained by the fact that the parasite devours all the beneficial substances in the intestines faster than they are absorbed into the blood.Therefore, weakness is also a symptom.

Pinworms infect the anus.As a result, itching of the anus is the main symptom of the presence of the parasite.The female pinworm emerges mainly at night through the anus and lays her eggs in the folds of the anus, smearing them with her secretions.The substance irritates the mucous membrane and causes itching.

If there are parasites in the body, the number of eosinophils in the blood increases.The number of these cells also increases with a progressive allergic reaction.Therefore, if the number of eosinophils in the biochemical blood test is higher than normal, helminthiasis should be investigated.

Popular drugs for worms: reliable and effective

symptoms of parasites in the body

Parasitic diseases are the most common.According to data from the World Health Organization, every tenth health problem is caused by helminths.The choice of anthelmintic drugs depends on the type of parasites, their location in the body, accompanying diseases and the severity of the infection.

Types of helminths

The general name helminths unites several groups of worms belonging to different species:

  • nematodes - roundworms, which include worms, hookworms, pinworms, roundworms, trichinella and many others, which have a cylindrical body in cross section, represent most types of worms;
  • cestodes - flat-shaped tapeworms: echinococcus, pork, cattle tapeworm, broad tapeworm, these parasites can reach a large size and cause fatal damage to internal organs;
  • trematodes - leaf-shaped worms: various types of flukes, flukes, localized in the tissues of organs.

Types of anthelmintic drugs

All drugs against worms are basically divided into:

  • Highly specialized products: they are designed for specific types of worms and can only be used if it has been determined in the laboratory what kind of parasite lives in the body.Only the attending physician is entitled to prescribe highly specialized anthelmintic drugs and to choose their dosage, taking into account the toxicity of the active ingredient of the anthelmintics, health status, age and weight category.
  • Broad-spectrum anthelmintic drugs.They affect all known types of worms and can also be used for preventive purposes.

The anthelmintic drugs produced by the pharmaceutical industry differ in their mechanism of action against parasites and include 2 main groups.

  1. A group of anthelmintic drugs whose active ingredients paralyze the muscles and organs of worms.Worms lose their ability to move, feed and die.In their natural form, the dead parasites are excreted from the body together with the faeces.
  2. Deworming agents that destroy the metabolic processes in the tissues of the parasites, so that after they die, they become sensitive to the action of the human enzyme system and are partially digested by the body.In this case, the remaining helminths are excreted in a dead form.

Almost all anthelmintic tablets are recommended to be taken with or after a meal.During treatment, it is advisable to combine anthelmintics with laxatives or enterosorbents to cleanse the body of toxins and dead parasites.

Treatment of nematodes

Effective anthelmintics against all types of roundworms - based on the substance levamisole.It is used against ascariasis, enterobiasis, trichuriasis and many other diseases.The anthelmintic effect is based on interfering with the metabolic processes of the parasites.Levamisole helps strengthen the immune system by activating the functions of aggressive T cells and macrophages against foreign proteins.

Anthelmintic drugs, the active ingredient of which is mebendazole, are used against all types of nematodes: roundworms, roundworms, trichinella, whipworms and toxocara.They treat mixed types of helminthic infections and are used to prevent disease in cases of suspected worm infection.The most effective remedies for roundworms in adults are:

The effect of the drugs is based on blocking the feeding processes of helminths and destroying their bodies.Contraindications for use are liver failure, hypersensitivity to mebendazole.Side effects of taking it may include nausea, dizziness, weakness and dyspepsia.

Treatment of cestodiasis and trematodes

Diseases caused by trematodes and cestodes cause serious damage to the intestines, liver, lungs and other internal organs and require hospitalization under the supervision of a specialist.For the treatment of trematodes, special agents and anthelmintic drugs are used, broad-spectrum drugs against all types of helminths:

These anthelmintics are effective against the extraintestinal forms of feline fluke, spear fluke, Chinese fluke, liver and lung fluke, and schistosoma in humans.The active compounds of the drugs disturb the structure of the cell membrane of the worms, promoting the paralysis of their muscles.

For cestodiasis caused by dwarf, pig or cattle tapeworm, broad tapeworm, niclosamide-based drugs are used to paralyze various types of tapeworms living in the intestines:

Anthelmintic drugs based on the active ingredient albendazole, the latest generation, have a universal ability to destroy almost all types of worms in humans.The most effective drugs are:

These broad-spectrum anthelmintics are used to treat nematodes, echinococci, alveococci, trematodes, tapeworms, as well as giardiasis and various mixed infections.The chemicals of these drugs interfere with the biological metabolic processes of the parasites - the glycogen reserves of their tissues are depleted, as a result of which the internal environment of the human body becomes aggressive for helminths.At the same time, paralysis of the intestinal tract of the worms occurs.

Worms

Worms(scientific namehelminths) are worms that live in humans.Worms are parasites, that is, organisms whose life activity is based on the exploitation of the host.

Helminths (worms) are the most common human parasites.According to research, every fourth person in the world is infected with worms.70 species of worms have been registered in Hungary.They all fall into three classes: roundworms, flatworms, and flukes.The most common roundworms are roundworms, mainly roundworms, roundworms and whipworms.

There are both intestinal and extraintestinal helminths.Intestinal are those that live in the lumen of the human intestine, and extraintestinal (or tissues) are those that live in muscle tissue or organs.Worms can affect the brain, lungs, liver and lymphatic vessels.

Several intestinal worms can parasitize a person at the same time, and this is a fairly common situation.

Infection of a person with worms is calledhelminthic infection.The term is also usedhelminthiasis.

Causes of helminthiasis

How does worm infection occur?

Adults living in humans lay a large number of eggs (hundreds and thousands per day).The worm eggs are excreted from the human body together with the faeces.In order for a new host to become infected, the eggs of the roundworm must enter the intestine.In most cases, this happens with food, for example, with unwashed hands or when eating unwashed vegetables and fruits.Some types of helminthic infections are geohelminthiasis.In this case, the parasite eggs must first mature by remaining in the soil for some time (such as roundworms).Other types of worms are used to mature intermediate "hosts" - animals.These tapeworms - the most famous parasitic flatworms - cattle and pigs.Their larvae mature in the muscles of animals and enter the human body together with meat that has undergone improper heat treatment, where they become adults.

The opposite situation is also possible when the human body is used by the helminth as an incubator for the larvae.The final host of such parasites is a predator.The predator is expected to catch the prey and eat the larva-infested flesh.In this regard, man is a dead end - the larva that enters it will not become an adult, but the larvae of predatory worms can cause us a lot of harm.In the human environment, two predatory animals are typical - a dog and a cat.They can become a source of infection.The eggs of the worms from these animals enter the human intestine, where they hatch into larvae that can then travel throughout the body.The liver is most often affected.In order to prevent the infection of pets, they should not be kissed, and a dog that can become infected with worm infection while running on the street should undergo regular worming.

ways of infection with worms

Worm eggs can also enter our body by inhaling dust or a sip of water when swimming in a lake.Flies carry worm eggs.

Worms in children

Children are more often infected with worms than adults.Toddlers tend to put everything in their mouths.While walking, the children play on the ground and in the sandbox.They can hug and kiss strangers and stray animals.They don't care about dirty hands.

Therefore, it is very important to try to teach children hygiene skills as early as possible.Small children must be supervised during walks, always have water and disinfectant ready for hand washing and face wiping.And at the first signs of helminthic infection, you should consult a doctor.

Enterobiasis - helminthiasis caused by worms

Pinworms are detected more often than other helminths (in 90% of cases of detection of worm infection).

Pinworms are gray-white cylindrical worms 2-12 mm long.They are parasites in the intestines.Females descend along the anus, exit the anus, lay eggs around its circumference, and then die.In this case, the patient feels severe itching in the anus.When scratching, the fungus eggs get on the skin of the hand and under the nails.Thus, permanent self-infection is possible if hygiene rules are not followed.

The lifespan of pinworms is short - 3-4 weeks.In theory, hygienic procedures - daily washing, hand hygiene, regular change of underwear and bed linen - are sufficient for recovery.And after a month, the pinworms should disappear.However, since it primarily infects children, it is often impossible to ensure the necessary level of hygiene.Therefore, if you suspect enterobiasis, you should see a doctor.

The main symptom of enterobiasis is itching in the anal area.

Ascariasis - helminthiasis caused by roundworms

Ascariasis is diagnosed in 70% of cases of helminth infection.

Ascaris is a round worm, the length of which reaches 25 cm in males and 40 cm in females.Ascaris eggs must mature in the soil.Ripe eggs enter the human body when eaten with dirty hands or from unwashed vegetables and fruits.The larva hatches from an egg in the human gut, but unlike the adult, it requires air.Therefore, the larva, which at this moment is microscopic, penetrates the blood vessels and travels throughout the body, reaching the lungs.In the lungs, the larvae grow and mature, move through the alveoli into the bronchi, and from the bronchi into the trachea.The human body reacts to the helminth with a cough (this is a specific symptom of ascariasis).The larvae are excreted in the sputum and are accidentally swallowed by humans.This allows the already developed larva to enter the intestine again, where the adult continues to live.The entire migration process takes about 2 weeks.

Roundworms can live in the human body for up to a year, in some cases longer.During this period, the waste materials of the roundworms poison the organism of the "host", causing disturbances in the functioning of the digestive, nervous and reproductive systems.

Methods of diagnosing helminthiasis

Since the symptoms of helminthiasis coincide with the signs of many other diseases, before prescribing treatment, it is necessary to make sure that worms are really present in the body.For this purpose, various laboratory diagnostic methods are used.

If a helminthic infection is suspected, the first step is to perform a stool test to detect worm eggs.In order to be more confident in the absence of worms, it is recommended to carry out such an analysis several times (a negative result in the case of a single analysis does not guarantee that there are no worms).However, enterobiasis cannot be detected by stool analysis.

Giardiasis - symptoms and treatment

What is giardiasis?The causes, diagnosis and treatment methods are discussed in an article by a doctor with 14 years of experience, an infectious disease specialist.

pig tapeworm in the human body

Definition of the disease.Causes of the disease

GiardiasisAn acute and chronic parasitic disease of man in manifest form or in the form of carriage, caused by intestinal lamblia, which colonizes the mucous membrane of the small intestine, disrupts parietal digestive processes, and contributes to the development and exacerbation of damage to the gastrointestinal tract and other diseases.

This is what Giardia looks like:

Giardia in the human body

In the front third of the body there is a suction disc in the form of a special depression.With its help, Giardia adheres to the villi of the mucous membrane of the small intestine.At the edges of the cytoplasmic membrane of the posterior surface there are club-shaped protrusions, which also create an additional anchoring component.

They reproduce by longitudinal division.In weakly stable environmental conditions, when they leave the host body: at room temperature, even in the absence of aggressive factors, they die quickly.

The cystic form is immobile.The parasites are oval in shape, do not contain free flagella (folded), their size reaches 10-14 microns, surrounded by a thick shell, slightly separated from the body (this feature is important when recognizing the species).

cysts in the human body

Mature cysts contain four nuclei, immature cysts contain two nuclei.It is formed in the lower intestines when it leaves the body with the feces.They are very stable in the external environment: they last for months in water at 4-20°C, and with good humidity they last for up to a week on contaminated (contaminated) food products.When boiled, the cysts die immediately, and when dried and at low humidity, they die within 24 hours.It is resistant to household water chlorination, alkalis and acids, as well as ultraviolet radiation.It tolerates low temperatures relatively well, but at the same time reduces its viability.

Symptoms of giardiasis

The incubation period lasts from several days to a month or more.Most often, the disease does not cause clinical manifestations at all, especially in adults.

The main possible symptoms of giardiasis are:

  • Symptoms of poisoning and autonomic changes are increased fatigue, tearfulness, irritability, sleep disorders, dizziness, heart rhythm disorders, low fever, and others.
  • Symptoms of damage to the gastrointestinal tract are pains of varying intensity and nature in different parts of the abdomen, nausea, loss of appetite, bitter taste in the mouth, stool disorders (constipation and diarrhea), coating on the tongue and bad breath, weight loss, etc.
  • Symptoms of skin damage are allergic rashes of various types and locations, atopic dermatitis, paleness and roughness of the skin, increased skin dryness, cheilitis (inflammatory changes on the skin and mucous membrane of the lips), seizures (cracks in the corners of the mouth), atypical/uncontrolled course of chronic skin pathologies.
  • Increased development and aggravation of diseases not directly related to giardiasis - bronchial asthma, pseudoallergic phenomena, gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, cholecystitis, ulcerative colitis, arthritis and so on.
  • Symptoms of malabsorption (loss of nutrients) are vitamin deficiency, retardation of physical and mental development, dystrophy (these manifestations are more typical of children).

Giardiasis in children

In children, the first symptoms of giardiasis are usually a low or feverish temperature (37.1-38.0°C or 38.0-39.0°C), abdominal pain, nausea, sometimes vomiting, bloating and loose stools.The abdomen is painful, swollen, and rumbles along the bowels.Babies become restless, scream, sleep is disturbed, giardiasis symptoms intensify during and after feeding, allergic dermatoses and diaper rash may occur.Over time, if left untreated, this can lead to impaired growth and psycho-emotional development, frequent colds or allergies, and the development of chronic problems with the gastrointestinal tract.

In older children and adults, vivid symptoms of giardiasis are rarely observed - the gradual development of dyspeptic symptoms of the moderate digestive system comes to the fore:

  • bloating;
  • discomfort and pain in the abdomen, especially in the navel and right hypochondrium;
  • stool disorders in various combinations;
  • appearance of plaque on the tongue;
  • sometimes bitterness in the mouth and skin manifestations (increased severity of acne, chronic polyetiological diseases such as psoriasis and dermatitis);
  • Possible vegetative disorders, headache, dizziness, instability of blood pressure, increase in body temperature, sensitivity of lymph nodes.

Giardiasis in pregnant women

Giardiasis in pregnant women is not specifically different from giardiasis in other people, but it can lead to an increased risk of developing B-12 deficiency anemia and reduced fetal weight (hypotrophy) in pregnant women.

Classification and developmental stages of giardiasis

According to the clinical form of giardiasis:

  • asymptomatic (carrier);
  • intestinal - mainly symptoms of the intestinal form, but stomach manifestations may also occur (abdominal discomfort, unstable stools, nausea);
  • biliary-pancreatic (reflex) - discomfort in the epigastrium and right hypochondrium, bitter taste in the mouth, increased incidence of poorly controlled gastroduodenitis and pancreatitis;
  • astheno-neurotic - weakness, lethargy, increased fatigue, irritability, emotional instability;
  • toxic-allergic - periodic rashes on the body, exacerbation of chronic skin diseases and bronchial asthma, eosinophilia;
  • mixed.

The course of giardiasis can be of three types:

  • acute - up to one month;
  • subacute - 1-3 months;
  • chronic - more than three months.

Depending on the presence of complications, giardiasis:

The disease has three stages:

Complications of giardiasis

Specific and non-specific complications of giardiasis are possible.

The specifics are as follows:

  • itchy, widespread rashes all over the body;
  • Quincke's edema - severe swelling of the subcutaneous tissue, sometimes accompanied by itching and a strong feeling of suffocation;
  • ophthalmopathy - disturbances in the perception of the organ of vision;
  • arthritis - discomfort and pain in the joints;
  • Hypokalemic myopathy is weakness of certain muscle groups.

Non-specific complications include:

  • stratification of intercurrent diseases (secondary flora);
  • protein-energy deficiency (hypo- and vitamin deficiency, weight loss, anemia and others).

Diagnosis of giardiasis

Laboratory diagnosis of giardiasis includes:

  1. Clinical blood test- eosinophilia, basophilia and increased ESR are observed in the acute period;in the following periods - moderate eosinophilia or normal eosinophil count, sometimes mild basophilia.
  2. Biochemical blood test- Total bilirubin and amylase levels are sometimes elevated.
  3. Coproscopic examination of stool- the "gold standard" of diagnosis.It allows identification of cysts (most often) and vegetative forms of Giardia (in rare cases).
  4. Fecal immunochromatographic method and PCR diagnostics(detection of antigens and nucleic acids of the parasite) - has good information content and can be used in combination with other research methods.
  5. ELISA diagnostics- low informative test, since the localization of Giardia in the lumen of the intestine does not create conditions for a full-fledged immune response, which is observed mainly in children with acute diseases, which results in a significant number of erroneous results in both hypo- and hyperdiagnosis.
  6. Duodenal sound(detection of vegetative forms of Giardia in the duodenum) - can be used in complex diagnostic cases and suspected co-invasion (for example, opisthorchiasis in opisthorchiasis).
  7. Abdominal ultrasound and FGDS- enables the identification of signs of impaired motility of the hepatobiliary region.

Differential diagnosis includes the exclusion of the following diseases:

  • parasitic diseases of other etiology (both in the intestine and in extraintestinal localization);
  • chronic gastroduodenitis (similar symptoms);
  • intestinal infections (salmonellosis, dysentery, rotavirus and others);
  • intestinal dysbiosis (a collective term characterized by stool instability, various types of abdominal discomfort, weight loss and other symptoms).

Treatment of parasites with folk remedies

The effectiveness and safety of traditional medicine methods have not been scientifically proven.Without proper treatment, giardiasis can lead to various complications: hives, angioedema, visual impairment, arthritis and muscle weakness.

Forecast.Prevention

If appropriate treatment is prescribed, the prognosis is favorable and complications are rare.

No specific prevention has been developed.The main focus should be on measures to meet health standards.
